The importance of vitamin D for our health

The importance of vitamin D for our health

At Evolutive Clinic we care about your wellbeing, and we know that an essential part of staying healthy is making sure your body gets all the nutrients it needs. Today we want to tell you about a nutrient that's fundamental to your health: vitamin D.

Why is vitamin D important?

Vitamin D is crucial for our bodies for several reasons:

  1. Bone health: this vitamin helps our body absorb calcium, a vital mineral for keeping bones strong and preventing conditions such as osteoporosis.
  2. Immune system: vitamin D plays an essential role in strengthening the immune system, helping to fight off infections and illness.
  3. Muscle function: it helps muscles work properly, which is important for maintaining mobility and strength throughout life.

How can you get vitamin D?

Our bodies can get vitamin D in several ways:

  1. Sun exposure: the main source of vitamin D is sunlight. Spending time outdoors and exposing your skin to direct sunlight helps your body produce this vitamin. Around 10 to 30 minutes several times a week is recommended, depending on your skin type and where you live.
  2. Diet: some foods are rich in vitamin D. They include oily fish (such as salmon, tuna and mackerel), beef liver, cheese, egg yolks and fortified foods such as milk and cereals.
  3. Supplements: in some cases, especially for people at risk of vitamin D deficiency, supplements may be needed. It's important to talk to a health professional before starting any supplement.

Vitamin D deficiency and health problems

Vitamin D deficiency can have serious effects on health. Some of the conditions and health problems linked to a lack of this vitamin are:

  1. Osteoporosis and osteomalacia: a lack of vitamin D can reduce bone density, increasing the risk of fractures and weak bones. In adults it can cause osteomalacia, a condition that leads to pain and muscle weakness.
  2. Autoimmune diseases: there is evidence suggesting that vitamin D deficiency may be linked to a higher risk of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  3. Cardiovascular problems: some studies indicate that low vitamin D levels may be associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and heart disease.
  4. Mental health: vitamin D is also linked to mental health. Deficiency has been associated with a higher risk of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

At Evolutive Clinic we recommend a balanced lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, time outdoors and, if needed, a consultation with a health professional to assess whether you need vitamin D supplements. Your health is our priority, and we're here to help you keep it in top condition.
